“Do YOU Hear the Sound of Silence?”

On April 22nd 2022, V Citizens Action Network (VCAN) along with Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) launched a new series Early Intervention, Ensuring Good Beginnings with the 1st session, asking the question “Do YOU Hear the Sound of Silence?”

The session’s, focus was on hearing impairment in children, the critical importance of early intervention, and BMC’s Early Detection and Intervention initiatives.

We had eminent ENT surgeon Dr. Milind Kirtane tell us all about ‘Sounds of Silence’ and its ramification especially on young children.

To enlighten us on Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) s initiatives we had Shri Chandrashekhar Chore, Joint Municipal Commissioner to Municipal Commissioner BMC, Mumbai.

The fully digital Social Sanchar was broadcast live on Facebook and YouTube, and was joined by viewers across the city and the globe.

About Dr. Milind Kirtane, Padma Shri, an eminent ENT surgeon, whose name is synonymous with Cochlear Implant Surgery, is also a Neuro Otologist. He is attached to; P D Hinduja, Breach Candy, Saifee and SRCC Hospitals. Dr. Kirtane is recognised nationally and internationally for his work on Vertigo, Endoscopic Sinus Surgery and Cochlear Implants. He has been doing Cochlear Implants for 26 years and has done or supervised as mentor over 3500 Cochlear Implants.

Dr. Kirtane also runs a trust THE I HEAR FOUNDATION that helps with funding children from economically weaker sections. He trains and mentors implant surgeons in Mumbai and travels all over India for the same and has thus helped in setting up over 60 Cochlear Implant centres nationwide.

It is most noteworthy to know that, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has brought lot of focus in the area of early-in-life detection and interventions across challenges in new born and young children pertaining to hearing, sight, mental development and more.

The launch of the new series with BMC ‘Early Intervention, Ensuring Good Beginnings’ now enriches VCAN’s focus area of health issues.

About Shri. Chandrashekhar Chore; he plays an instrumental role in facilitating strategic as well as tactical interventions, pre-empting as well as rapidly responding to the emerging challenges and situations. He has been a part of several marquee initiatives which provided templates for the organization to follow and has also worked for ‘Ease of Doing Business’ by BMC, has actively worked to bring about transparency, accountability and efficiency by reframing SOPs, embracing technology and building modules within SAP as well as social media usage by BMC.

Smt. Indrani Malkani, Chairman & Managing Trustee of VCAN, greeted all viewers and warmly welcomed the Guest Speakers Dr. Milind Kirtane Padma Shri, and Shri Chandrashekhar Chore.

She gave a very brief introduction about VCAN, its overarching objective of establishing linkages and interactions between Citizens and several Government Authorities, by working in partnership. She mentioned VCAN’s focus areas of work, the interactive Web Portal and the live interactive talk show titled TogetherVCAN’s Social Sanchars with Senior Government Officials as Guest Speakers, and about the new series ‘Health and Wellbeing’ with leading Doctors and Healthcare Professionals as Speakers.

Thereafter, Smt. Malkani conveyed her sincere thanks to Elan Pharma, specially to Mr. D P V Raju, Elan Pharma’s Managing Director, for extending ready support to make the Social Sanchar possible.

She appreciatively thanked VCAN’s Implementing Partner Citizens Association for Child Rights (CACR).

She expressly thanked the Student Council, the NSS Students and all the Students of VCAN’s College Partner Jai Hind College and all the other *Colleges who have associated with VCAN.

Smt. Malkani then requested her fellow trustee Shri. V. Ranganathan, a former Municipal Commissioner of Mumbai, and who has also led the State of Maharashtra as the Chief Secretary, to formally introduce Guest Speakers Dr. Milind Kirtane Padma Shri, and Shri Chandrashekhar Chore.

The first speaker was Dr. Milind Kirtane, followed by Shri Chandrashekhar Chore. 

Both Speakers made it easy for the audience to understand all aspects of the session with their clear explanations.  

Dr. Kirtane’s opening statement set the session’s roadmap by quoting Helen Keller “Blindness cuts us off from things, but deafness cuts us off from people”.

Dr. Kirtane concluded his opening remarks by showing a short film and mentioning that it was important to remember:

Smt. Malkani then invited Shri Chandrashekar Chore to acquaint all about BMC’s initiatives and emphasised that it was noteworthy, that this year on World Hearing Day, the BMC undertook the first ever major drive to highlight the issue of ‘Hearing’.

Recognizing that it is extremely critical that citizens across all sections of society get to know of BMC’s initiatives, Shri. Chandrashekhar Chore spoke on BMC’s views, commitments and Early Detection and intervention initiatives.
