TogetherVCAN’s Digital Training on ‘Get Trained as a Fire Volunteer’ Conducted by Mumbai Fire Brigade

“Get Trained as a Fire Volunteer”

Mumbai is rapidly growing vertically, with high-rise & super high-rise buildings dotting the city, these in turn pose a high risk to their occupants, Fire Fighters & First Responders during fire evacuations and rescues. All of us, wherever we may live or work, need to involve ourselves as a community to ensure our own safety and that of others around us.

With this in mind, Mumbai Fire Brigade and V Citizens Action Network came together to conduct a first of its kind Digital Training for Fire Volunteers, on Saturday 21^st August 2021. The training session course was on ‘Fire Prevention and Basic Fire-fighting’.

Smt. Indrani Malkani, Chairman & Managing Trustee of VCAN, greeted all viewers on behalf Mumbai Fire Brigade and V Citizens Action Network and welcomed Shri Prabhat Rahangdale, Dy. Municipal Commissioner, Disaster Management, for launching the session on behalf of the Municipal Commissioner, Shri Iqbal Singh Chahal. She then welcomed Shri Hemant Parab, Chief Fire Officer, Mumbai Fire Brigade for his guidance and Shri Deepak Ghosh, Dy. Chief Fire Officer, for conducting the training session.

The Training Session which was fully digital, was broadcast live on YouTube, and Facebook and was joined specially by college students, employees of Royal Bombay Yacht Club, and Sea Cadets, as well as general viewers across the city and the globe.

Smt. Malkani began by explaining the format of the Training Session, and about the issuance of the E-Certificate post the training session. She also gave a very brief introduction about VCAN and its overarching objective of establishing linkages and interactions between Citizens and several Government Authorities, by working in partnership. She impressed upon VCAN’s focus areas of work, the interactive Web Portal and the live interactive talk show titled TogetherVCAN’s Social Sanchars, with Senior Government Officials as Guest Speakers, and about the new series ‘Health and Wellbeing’ with leading Doctors and Healthcare Professionals as Speakers.

For supporting the Digital Training session, Smt. Malkani conveyed her grateful thanks to Spartan Engineering Industries Pvt. Ltd. a leading provider of ‘Firemen Evacuation Lifts’, a crucial component of firefighting and plays an important part to save the saviours, occupants and assets. She warmly thanked VCAN’s Implementing Partner Citizens Association for Child Rights (CACR).

Smt. Malkani expressly thanked the Student Council, the NSS Students and all the Students of VCAN’s College Partner Jai Hind College.

She also thanked Team Teknowlegion for powering the fully Digital Training session and other Social Sanchars and for keeping VCAN’s Web Portal going. She thanked VCAN’s social media consultant Shri. Sumit Lulla, all viewers, colleagues and networking partners and friends in the media.

Smt. Malkani then requested her fellow trustee Shri. V. Ranganathan, a former Municipal Commissioner of Mumbai, and who has also led the State of Maharashtra as the Chief Secretary, to first introduce Shri Prabhat Rahangdale Dy. Municipal Commissioner Disaster Management, followed by Shri Hemant Parab and Shri Deepak Ghosh.

On behalf of the Municipal Commissioner, Shri Iqbal Singh Chahal, Shri Prabhat Rahangdale Dy. Municipal Commissioner Disaster Management, launched the first of its kind Digital Training session by Mumbai Fire Brigade. Shri Rahangdale shared some very practical points which would be beneficial to a long-term approach to sustaining training sessions on Fire-fighting and strengthening community participation.

Smt. Malkani warmly thanked Shri. Rahangdale for his encouraging and motivating words and on behalf of VCAN, presented him with a digital memento.

Thereafter Smt. Malkani invited Shri Hemant Parab to speak about the nature of the Digital Training. After a short introductory talk by Shri Hemant Parab, Shri Deepak Ghosh started the training session with his presentation.

The training covered issues such as the regulatory framework governing fire services, the duties and responsibilities of the Fire Brigade including non-firefighting activities, the capabilities and infrastructure of the Mumbai Fire Brigade, and some helpful tips and advice for if you are ever faced with a fire.

He shared some actual instances which took place in recent Mumbai fires, wherein people disregarded instructions from the Fire personnel, thereby leading to fatalities.

At the end of the session a short Q&A followed.
