Social Sanchar with Shri. Hemant Parab, Chief Fire Officer, Mumbai Fire Brigade on 16th July 2021

“In the Line of FIRE: Is Your Building FIRE SAFE?”

Over the years Mumbai has been susceptible to major fires, and realising the importance of having our communities involved in FIRE SAFETY and that compliance with Fire Safety Regulations is crucial for all, V Citizens Action Network (VCAN) held a Social Sanchar on 16th July 2021 with Shri. Hemant Parab, Chief Fire Officer, Mumbai Fire Brigade.

As the topic of the Social Sanchar states “In the Line of FIRE: Is Your Building FIRE SAFE”, the focus of discussion was towards some very pertinent public issues, such as;

  • How do we know if our building is Fire Safe?
  • What are the compliances for our flats, our building, our schools and offices?
  • What are the Do’s and Don’ts in case of a Fire?
  • What is Fire Audit and how should one proceed?
  • How can the different demographic communities involve themselves to ensure their own safety and that of others?
  • Please explain about mock drills and how to go about it
  • What are the other services that our Fire Brigade provides?

Smt. Indrani Malkani, Chairman & Managing Trustee of VCAN, greeted all viewers and warmly welcomed the Guest Speaker Shri. Hemant Parab.

The Social Sanchar which was fully digital, was broadcast live on Facebook and YouTube, and was joined by viewers across the city and the globe.

Smt. Malkani gave a very brief introduction about VCAN, its overarching objective of establishing linkages and interactions between Citizens and several Government Authorities, by working in partnership. She touched upon VCAN’s focus areas of work, the interactive Web Portal and the live interactive talk show titled TogetherVCAN’s Social Sanchars with Senior Government Officials as Guest Speakers, and about the new series ‘Health and Wellbeing’ with leading Doctors and Healthcare Professionals as Speakers.

In the context of the Social Sanchar on Fire Safety, Smt. Malkani requested viewers to read and use the Community Resilience Indicator (CRI) book, which is available on the portal.

Thereafter, Smt. Malkani conveyed her grateful thanks to One Society, for supporting the Social Sanchar. They are into Smart Society Management and offers to manage everything for a Society, with a collaborative approach.

She favourably thanked VCAN’s Implementing Partner Citizens Association for Child Rights (CACR).

Smt. Malkani expressly thanked the Student Council, the NSS Students and all the Students of VCAN’s College Partner Jai Hind College and all the other *Colleges who have associated with VCAN.

She further thanked Team Teknowlegion for powering the fully digital Social Sanchars and for keeping VCAN’s Web Portal going, and also VCAN’s social media consultant Shri. Sumit Lulla, all viewers, colleagues and networking partners and friends in the media.

Smt. Malkani informed the viewers that since many questions had been received, the answers to the pre-sent questions have been integrated in the Shri Parab’s presentation.

Smt. Malkani then requested her fellow trustee Shri. V. Ranganathan, a former Municipal Commissioner of Mumbai, and who has also led the State of Maharashtra as the Chief Secretary, to introduce Guest Speaker Shri. Hemant Parab.

In his presentation, Shri Parab covered issues such as the regulatory framework governing fire services, the duties and responsibilities of the Fire Brigade including non-firefighting activities, the capabilities and infrastructure of the Mumbai Fire Brigade, and some helpful tips and advice for if you are ever faced with a fire.

He also discussed some of the major fires that had occurred recently and the learnings from them.

This was followed by a lively interactive session where Shri Parab fielded questions from the audience ranging from measures to tackle electrical safety to fire-fighting measures for individual households.
