“BLACK FUNGUS: Understanding the Mystery”

With numerous messages and WhatsApp Forwards going around, it is crucial to have the correct perspective of the challenge related to “BLACK FUNGUS: Understanding the Mystery” which is affecting COVID patients and can be fatal.

V Citizen’s Action Network (VCAN) held a Social Sanchar on 27th May 2021, with eminent Physician and Diabetologist Dr. Sanjay Agarwal Fellow of American College of Endocrinology, Director, Aegle Clinic – Diabetes Care, Head, Dept. of Medicine, Ruby Hall Clinic, and Sr. Consultant in Diabetes & Medicine, Jehangir Hospital, to address the current major talking point, the rise of Mucormycosis commonly known as Black Fungus.

The fully digital Social Sanchar was broadcast live on Facebook and YouTube, and was joined by viewers across the city and the globe.

Smt. Indrani Malkani, Chairman & Managing Trustee of VCAN, started the session by greeting all viewers and warmly welcoming Guest Speaker Dr. Sanjay Agarwal.

She gave a very brief introduction about VCAN, its overarching objective of establishing linkages and interactions between Citizens and several Government Authorities, by working in partnership. She touched upon VCAN’s focus areas of work, the interactive Web Portal and the live interactive talk show titled TogetherVCAN’s Social Sanchars with Senior Government Officials as Guest Speakers, and about the new series ‘Health and Wellbeing’ with leading Doctors and Healthcare Professionals as Speakers.

Then, Smt. Malkani conveyed her appreciative thanks to VCAN’s Implementing Partner Citizens Association for Child Rights (CACR), who has come forward to also be the Support Partner for this Social Sanchar.

She expressly thanked the Student Council, the NSS Students and all the Students of VCAN’s College Partner Jai Hind College and all the other *Colleges who have associated with VCAN.

She conveyed her thanks to Team Teknowlegion for powering the fully digital Social Sanchars and for keeping VCAN’s Web Portal going, VCAN’s social media consultant Shri. Sumit Lulla, all viewers, colleagues and networking partners and friends in the media.

The viewers were informed by Smt. Malkani that since many questions had been received, answers to the pre-sent questions have been integrated in the doctor’s presentation.

Smt. Malkani then requested her fellow trustee Shri. V. Ranganathan, a former Municipal Commissioner of Mumbai, and who has also led the State of Maharashtra as the Chief Secretary, to introduce Guest Speaker Dr. Sanjay Agarwal.

Dr. Agarwal concluded by telling the audience not to panic and that every illness may not necessarily be COVID or ucormycosis. However, one must have a high index of suspicion and go to the doctor as soon as possible to verify any symptoms. He stressed the importance of not letting it get delayed and allowing the fungus to grow.

At the end of the session, on behalf of the Trustees of VCAN Smt. Malkani presented an online memento of appreciation to Dr Agarwal. She then thanked Dr. Agarwal and the viewers for joining the session and ended the digital Social Sanchar.
