Curing COVID Confusion

With the 2nd wave of COVID in full swing, V Citizens Action Network (VCAN) realising that the citizens have more doubts and questions than ever, conducted a special Social Sanchar on 30th April 2021 taking up the issue of Curing COVID Confusion with Dr. Rajesh Dere, the Dean of BKC Jumbo COVID Hospital, one of Mumbai’s largest dedicated COVID Hospitals and Vaccination Centres.

The fully digital Social Sanchar session was broadcast live on Facebook and YouTube, and was joined by viewers across the city and the globe.

Smt. Indrani Malkani, Chairman & Managing Trustee of VCAN, started the session by greeting all viewers and warmly welcoming Dr. Rajesh Dere.

She shared a brief introduction about VCAN and its overarching objective, which is to establish effective linkages between Government and Citizens by working in partnership with several Government Authorities. She highlighted the focus areas of work of VCAN and its interactive Web Portal and the live interactive talk show titled TogetherVCAN’s Social Sanchars with Senior Government Officials as Guest Speakers. She also spoke about the new series ‘Health and Wellbeing’ with leading Doctors and Healthcare Professionals as Speakers.

She gratefully thanked VCAN’s Support Partner RDC Concrete (India) Pvt. Ltd, for supporting the Social Sanchar and also mentioned that RDC Concrete had supported a Social Sanchar earlier as well. She conveyed VCAN’s deep appreciation of their consistent support.

She conveyed her warm thanks to VCAN’s Implementing Partner Citizens Association for Child Rights (CACR)

She specially thanked the Student Council, the NSS, and all the Students of VCAN’s College Partner Jai Hind College and all the other *Colleges who have associated with VCAN.

Smt. Malkani then invited her fellow trustee Shri. V. Ranganathan, a former Municipal Commissioner of Mumbai, and who has also led the State of Maharashtra as the Chief Secretary, to introduce Guest Speaker Dr. Rajesh Dere.

Dr. Dere spoke about many of the issues related to COVID Testing, Treatment, Procedure of Use of Oxygen and Ventilator for the patient, Vaccination process, among other related issues concerning COVID.

Some highlights which emerged from Dr. Dere’s talk and from the multiple questions that had been raised are listed below. Notably, a large number of the questions came from young adults.

  • Explanation about the two most talked about medicines; Remdesivir and Tocilizumab; The condition in which it is normally recommended, the effectiveness and the procurement process
  • Facts about Convalescent Plasma … How effective is such a treatment and how can it be donated?
  • After the quarantine period, does the COVID Patient necessarily need to do a test to check if Negative and also when does a COVID Positive person becomes non-contagious
  • About Oxygen; the different ways of administering and other pertinent points one should know about
  • Are there new symptoms seen with patients in the 2nd wave?
  • Asymptomatic persons, when and how does one know if a person is likely to be COVID Positive?
  • Differences between vaccines and which is better?
  • Is the vaccine safe? What exactly are the effects i.e. is there possibilities a vaccinated person could spread the virus?
  • Are there any particular precautions to be taken after the first dose of vaccine?
  • Could elective or emergency surgery have any issue with vaccination?
  • What are the ways to strengthen the capacity of the Lungs?
  • Are Home remedies/steam/kada effective against COVID?
  • Should one take steam inhalation?
  • COVID dead bodies, in which circumstances would there be post mortem?
  • About Home masking, when is it required?

The interactive session with Dr. Dere was noteworthy, with his frank style of explaining the issues related to COVID, and it was so easy to understand and relate to, that it kept all viewers captivated.

At the end of the session, on behalf of the Trustees of VCAN Smt. Malkani presented an online memento of appreciation to Dr Dere. She then thanked Dr. Dere and the viewers for joining the session and ended the digital Social Sanchar.
