“Monsoon Maladies in Times of COVID”

The 2nd wave of the COVID-19 pandemic may be slowing down, but the Monsoon, like every year, has brought its own airborne, waterborne and mosquito-borne diseases, making the days ahead even more challenging.

New questions have arisen such as;

  • How can you tell the difference between a Monsoon related Malady and COVID?
  • Can someone with Malaria, Hepatitis, or Influenza, also get COVID?
  • With challenges and hesitancy in visiting hospitals, can one or should one handle these Maladies at home?
  • What does palliative care at home entail?
  • End of Life issues in the ICU

To clear our doubts and address our questions on Monsoon Maladies in Times of COVID, V Citizen’s Action Network (VCAN) held a Social Sanchar on 24th June 2021, with Dr. Farhad Kapadia, one of the most experienced senior Consultant Physician and Intensivist in the country. Dr. Kapadia is Consultant Physician & Intensivist at P. D. Some notable takeaways discussed and emphasised by Dr. Kapadia included:

  • Do NOT ignore a fever that is high or is lasting for more than 1-2 days
    • Do not try to sort out on phone
    • Do not self-administer antibiotics
    • Do not keep switching antibiotics
    • Do not chose the investigation ad hoc by yourself
  • Consult a doctor & err on the side of early unnecessary investigations rather than delayed investigations

Two important take home messages for Monsoon Illness

  • Recognizing the danger signs
    • Undue breathlessness
    • Undue lightheadedness
    • Confusion or other subtle neurological changes
    • Excess vomiting & unable to retain fluids
    • Passing too little urine
  • Go to a hospital or emergency department
    • Do not try to “wait & see”
    • Do not self-medicate or treat over the phone

He concluded by mentioning that it was important to remember:

  • The vast majority of monsoon illness are mild & self-limiting
  • Patients are going to get better regardless of what treatment they take or don’t take
    • In the absence of danger symptoms, hospitalization is not necessary
  • Most patients do not need other interventions like platelets, antibiotics etc.
    • Too much needless panic created by abnormal investigations

As is the at the end of the session, on behalf of the Trustees of VCAN Smt. Malkani presented an online memento of appreciation to Dr Kapadia. She thanked Dr. Kapadia and all the viewers for joining the session and ended the digital Social Sanchar.
