Plastic ban violation: BMC cuts fines from 5k to 200
Realising the common man may not be able to cough up a steep penalty of Rs 5,000 in case he/she is caught using the banned plastic, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed to reduce the penalty to Rs 200. However, this will apply only to the common public, while shopkeepers and manufacturers may still have to cough up Rs 5,000.
Ever since the March 23 notification, issued under the Maharashtra Non-Biodegradable Garbage (Control) Act, 2006, banned the manufacture, sale, transport, storage and use of plastic including bags, disposable plastic spoons, forks, cups, glasses, containers and thermocol for decoration, the authorities had said those found using the banned plastic would be penalised Rs 5,000 the first time and Rs10,000 the second time.
