Cabs, autorickshaws to soon have rooftop ‘status updates’

Home dept decides to make it mandatory for them to install lit-up sighs that display ‘For hire’, ‘Hired’ and ‘Off duty’ in English and Marathi.

The home dept has decided to amend the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 to make it mandatory for all taxis & autorickshaws in Mumbai to have lit-up signs on their roofs with the word ‘For hire’, ‘Hired’ & ‘Off duty’ in English & Marathi. The decision follows numerous complaints from people about taxi and autorickshaw drivers refusing to ply short distances.
