70% beds at five biggest jumbo Covid facilities now with private contractors
The BMC has outsourced over 70% of the beds at five of its biggest Covid-19 field hospitals, which are also known as jumbo Covid health care centres. These were set up at a total cost of over Rs 100 Crore, but the BMC has struggled to find medical personnel to man the beds. While treatment at the facilities will continue to be free, the BMC will pay the contractors Rs. 6,000 per ICU bed per day, sources said (the amount for a normal bed count not be ascertained). The Contractors in turn are supposed to arrange medical and other staff. While 80% of the beds at the facilities are currently vacant, the BMC has initiated the process to free up civicand state-run hospitals by treating new Covid-19 cases at the jumbo centres.
