Brain Attack or Stroke – A Ticking Time Bomb – Session II

 

On 28th of October the eve of World Stroke Day V Citizens Action Network held the first session with Dr. Anil Karapurkar, Interventional Neurosurgeon, Senior Consultant, Breach Candy Hospital, on Brain Attack or Strokes, with a focus on Ischemic Attack or Stroke, prevention and latest techniques etc.

On 8th December the second session was held to discuss the second type of Stroke: Haemorrhagic Strokes, with Dr. Anil Karapurkar.

The session was broadcast live on Facebook and YouTube, and was joined by viewers across the city, and around the globe.

Smt. Indrani Malkani, Chairman & Managing Trustee of VCAN, started the Social Sanchar with a welcome address. In the brief introduction about VCAN, she mentioned VCAN’s overarching objective, which is to establish effective linkages between Government and Citizens and that VCAN works in partnership with several Government Authorities, the focus areas of VCAN’s work, the interactive Web Portal and the live interactive talk show titled TogetherVCAN’s Social Sanchars.

She shared that with the ongoing COVID pandemic, VCAN has started the new version of the Social Sanchar, which is fully digital and has expanded with a new Social Sanchar series – ‘Health and Wellbeing‘, featuring leading Doctors and Healthcare Professionals as Speakers.
VCAN’s regular Social Sanchar programmes, will also continue in due time.

Smt. Malkani then conveyed her grateful thanks to VCAN’s Support Partner Mr. Sanjiv Gandhi and Hester Diagnostics Pvt. Ltd, for supporting this Social Sanchar.

She expressed her appreciative thanks towards Team Teknowlegion for powering the fully digital Social Sanchars and for always being vigilant and keeping VCAN’s Web Portal going. She thanked VCAN’s social media consultant Mr. Sumit Lulla, and specially thanked the Student Council and the Students of VCAN’s College Partner Jai Hind College and all the other *Colleges who have associated with VCAN, as well as all the viewers, colleagues and networking partners and friends in the media.

Smt. Malkani then invited her fellow trustee Shri. V. Ranganathan, to introduce Dr Anil Karapurkar.

After the introduction by Shri Ranganathan, Smt. Malkani requested Dr. Karapurkar to give his opening remarks and to specially enlighten all on;

Hypertension and Aneurysm

  • How are Hemorrhagic Strokes different from the other types of Stroke?
  • What are the leading causes of a Hemorrhagic Stroke?
  • What are the risks?
  • Is Emergency treatment required for cerebral haemorrhage?

Dr. Anil Karapurkar started the session with his **Presentation explaining the various types of strokes, and how hemorrhagic strokes are different from other strokes; the leading causes; the risks and in which cases emergency treatment is required such as, in case of cerebral haemorrhage.

In his opening remarks Dr. Karapurkar noted several points such as that Ischemic strokes accounted for 85% of strokes while the different types of Hemorrhagic strokes accounted for 15%. He said that India is the capital of Diabetics and Diabetics is a leading trigger for strokes, making India the Stroke capital of the world.

At the end of the extended and exhaustive session, Smt. Malkani and Shri. Ranganathan thanked Dr. Anil Karapurkar for his clear and informative presentation and responses.

Smt. Malkani informed the viewers that questions that would have been received during the session and could not be taken up despite the extension of the session, will be sent to Dr. Karapurkar and the answers will be later published with a link in the Report on VCAN’s Web Portal.

Smt. Malkani then closed the session, reiterating the necessity to create community awareness on Brain Attacks or Stroke and that VCAN will take it forward to create awareness.

An online memento of appreciation on behalf of VCAN was presented by Smt. Malkani to Dr. Karapurkar.

Smt. Malkani then thanked VCAN’s Trustees and the viewers for joining the session and ended the digital Social Sanchar.
