Community Resiliency Indicator – The CRI Book
There are two kinds of disasters; natural and manmade. Both kinds of disasters cause loss of life and destruction of property. A certain degree of damage is inevitable when disaster strikes, but the resilience of a community can make all the difference. Community Resiliency is the capacity of human and natural/physical systems to adapt to and recover from sudden change.
The Disaster Management cell of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) has created a book called Community Resiliency Indicators (CRI) as part of its Mumbai Emergency Operations Plan (MuEOP).
Its vision is to build a safe and disaster-resilient community by developing a holistic, proactive, multi-hazard and technology driven strategy through a culture of prevention, mitigation and preparedness to generate a prompt and efficient response of community at times of disaster.
The MCGM intends to assess the vulnerability and ability of a community to respond to disasters, spread awareness, promote education & training at community level, to build capacity and support the ongoing ability of a community, to help each other, to identify strengths and challenges, to mobilize resources, and work collectively during disasters.
