On 18th February 2021, V Citizen’s Action Network (VCAN) held a Social Sanchar of much significance, with Dr. Nadeem Rais, Consultant Endocrinologist: Breach Candy Hospital and Chowpatty Medical Centre, to talk about “DIABETES – The Trends they are A’Changing – Role of Stress & Nutrition” as this disease, one of India’s fastest growing Lifestyle Diseases, is no longer just the disease of the old or the overweight.
New trends have emerged showing the role played by stress resilience and nutrition, especially in the young.

The Social Sanchar which was fully digital, was broadcast live on Facebook and YouTube, and was joined by viewers across the city and the globe.

The session began with Smt. Indrani Malkani, Chairman & Managing Trustee of VCAN, greeting all viewers and warmly welcoming Guest Speaker Dr. Nadeem Rais. She gave a very brief introduction about VCAN and highlighted some crucial issues that were to be addressed by Dr. Nadeem Rais in his opening remarks and through his presentation.

Smt. Malkani informed viewers that Dr. Rais would be joined by Ms. Tejal Vora, Nutritionist, to speak on issues related to Personalised Nutrition.

Then, Smt. Malkani conveyed her grateful thanks to VCAN’s Support Partner for the evening’s Social Sanchar, ERIS Lifesciences.

She thanked VCAN’s Implementing Partner Citizens Association for Child Rights (CACR) and she specially thanked the Student Council, the NSS Students and all the Students of VCAN’s College Partner Jai Hind College and all the other *Colleges who have associated with VCAN.

She expressed her appreciative thanks to Team Teknowlegion for powering the fully digital Social Sanchars and for keeping VCAN’s Web Portal going, VCAN’s social media consultant Shri. Sumit Lulla, all viewers, colleagues and networking partners and friends in the media.

Smt. Malkani then requested her fellow trustee Shri. V. Ranganathan, a former Municipal Commissioner of Mumbai, and who has also led the State of Maharashtra as the Chief Secretary, to introduce Guest Speaker Dr. Nadeem Rais.

Before Dr Rais began his presentation, Smt. Malkani informed the viewers that since many questions had been received from CACR, answers to the pre-sent questions have been integrated in the doctor’s presentation. Dr. Rais took up many of the pressing questions and addressed them in his opening remarks and his presentation. The notable issues related to:

  • How does Stress and Nutrition impact Diabetes?
  • About the two main factors that cause it: Genetics and the Environment
  • Changing trends in the onset of diabetes in generational cohorts i.e. Traditional to Millennials
  • The Role of Stress Resilience in the development of diabetes
  • The prevention and Reversal of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Is it a myth or reality
  • Reactive vs Proactive Behaviours in the Management of Diabetes
  • The role of personalised nutrition programs in the reversal of diabetes

There were multiple questions raised at the session related to; new trend of Diabetes in the young, the variations of symptoms, multiple factors that are related to Diabetes, the stress resilience in Diabetes, issues related to the current COVID time, and today’s Lifestyle, and personalised nutrition to effect reversal of blood sugar and blood glucose control.

The clear-cut replies to the multitude of questions raised at the session and bringing clarity on issues by Dr. Nadeem Rais, and also explanations by Ms. Tejal Vora on personalised nutrition, would best be heard directly for comprehensive understanding and also relating to one’s own personal issues, where applicable.

The interactive session with Dr. Rais was most noteworthy, with his clear and to the point of explaining the various aspects related to the topic, that was easy to understand.

The two takeaway messages from Dr. Rais is simple and highly relevant in today’s times;

  • His advice to the young people was, to accept the losses that comes one way and never to lose focus
  • His appeal to parents was, not to not push their children to extreme limits as it could affect their stress resilience

At the end of the session, on behalf of the Trustees of VCAN Smt. Malkani presented an online memento of appreciation to Dr Rais. She then thanked Dr. Rais and Ms. Vora and the viewers for joining the session and ended the digital Social Sanchar.
