Plastic bags are back

In just over six months of enforcement of a statewide ban, plastic bags have made a comeback in the city-and with a vengeance.

On June 23, the state government enforced the ban on the manufacture, usage, sale and distribution of single-use plastic materials – three months after issuing a notification. To ensure compliance, the BMC formed squads of 310 inspectors to conduct raids on shops and levy on offenders fines ranging from Rs. 5,000 to Rs 25,000, with a provision of even a three month jail term. Those who refuse to pay the fine can be taken to court by the BMC.
