Mumbai: Experts say decentralisation is the key

Decentralization of waste process and segregation at the source are the best practices to reduce the burden of solid waste, suggests the experts. is also crucial.

Municipal solid waste can be divided into wet and dry waste. In Mumbai, solid waste consists of 42 % wet waste i.e. Biodegradable waste from residential and non-residential areas. Generally wet waste is difficult to be managed due to high moisture content. Though segregation is mandatory at source level now, it still not gets the required momentum. As per the civic body’s official data, the segregation at source has risen up to 65 per cent. But it is still way below the 100 per cent achievement. Even the BMC could not bring a solution to dry waste until now.
