The Indian National Flag – Do’s and Dont’s

The Indian National Flag is a Symbol of our Nation’s Sovereignty and National Pride. It represents the hopes and dreams of the Citizens of India. Disrespecting and Insulting the National Flag is an offence which is punishable under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971.

The National Flag can be displayed by all members of the general public, organizations and educational institutions as long as the Guiding Principles prescribed in the Flag Code of India, 2002 are followed as given below.

  • The Flag should always occupy a position of honour and be distinctly placed.
  • It shall always be flown with “Saffron” colour on top.
  • It should not be flown on a pole with any other Flag.
  • The Flag should not be used as a festoon, rosette, or bunting, or in any other manner for decoration.
  • A damaged or dishevelled Flag should not be displayed.
  • To the extent possible, the Flag should conform to the specifications prescribed in the Flag Code of India, 2002.
  • When the Flag is in damaged or soiled condition, it should be disposed off in private consistent with the dignity of the Flag.
  • When the Flag is displayed in the open, it should be, as far as possible, flown from sunrise to sunset, irrespective of weather conditions.
  • The Flag is not to be used for any commercial purpose.
  • A Flag made of paper may be used by the public on occasions of important national, cultural and sports events. However, such Flags should not be discarded or thrown on the ground after the event. As far as possible, these should be disposed off in private, consistent with the dignity of the Flag.
  • A Flag made of plastic should not be used as they are not biodegradable like Paper Flags. Further, the disposal of Flags made of plastic, with dignity, is problem.
